Happy New Year From CBC Toastmasters

By Xiping Yang

Happy New Year of 2008! For the past 3 years, Citizens for Better Communicator Toastmasters Club has achieved the President's Distinguished Club Award, the highest award in the Toastmasters organization. Looking back of the first half of the Toastmasters year 2007, a lot of great things happened in our club, and we are happy to share our excitements with all the members in the CBC family.

Our club membership has grown dramatically; we have a total 13 new members who joined our Toastmasters family since August 1, 2007.  Since our move to the new meeting location at the Fremont Adult School, in July 2007, our club gets more visitors, and more recognition from the community.

We won two awards: Elite Award contest (pays a full year’s due for each club member by October 2007) & Smedley Award contest (gets 5 new club members from September to October 2007). As a return of all club members’ effort and hard work, we earned a $100 certificate for the club.

On November 10, 2007, we had a joint meeting with the Fantastic Toastmasters Club with whom we have maintained an ongoing good relationship.  It was a lot of fun getting together with our old friends at Fantastic Toastmasters. We had over 20 members attend the joint meeting; members also socialized during the snack time after the meeting. Yes, it's such a great meeting, several members actually asked if we can have a regular joint meeting (e.g., Quarterly), and it’s a great opportunity to step outside the comfort zone of our own club, and to have a fun time with other Toastmasters! It's always a learning experience to see how other people do what we've become accustomed to our own way.

Maybe you are wondering what our current status is for Distinguished Club Program (DCP) for this Toastmasters year.  Believe it or not, we have achieved 5 of 10 goals so far, which means we already achieved Distinguished Club Award. We have 2 members who accomplished their CC (Component Communicator) Award and 2 members who got their CL (Component Leader) Award.

On December 15, 2007, I attended the Toastmasters District 57 President’s breakfast meeting.  A lot of people asked me about our club’s status, how did we manage to get that many new members, and how our club maintains such high meeting attendance, especially our area governor, George Marshall commented several times that our club is doing really well.

We have a good start in 2008. Thanks for everyone's participation, especially our Toastmaster, ChenChen Fan's extra effort to make our first meeting in 2008 so successful. And even more, we had 9 visitors for this meeting (thanks to Amy & Steve Cho’s effort).  Keep it up, CBC Toastmasters, and we can make our club achieve President's Distinguished Club again this year!

Dear CBC family members, would you like to improve your communication and public speaking skills in year 2010? Make it one of your New Years Resolutions and come visit our Toastmasters club, we look forward to meeting you.

Happy New Year from all CBC Toastmasters members!
